So you want to make a website?

My advice on websites-Do and Don'ts

You've been looking at websites and thought hey I’d love to have my own. But you don't know where to get started well here’s my advice on websites...

Make your own layout is probably one of the best pieces of advice and many web designers will agree. It makes the website more original and people will be most likely to visit again; as long as your layout is not too over the top. People recognise web site builders and pre-made layouts and too be honest with you they're not that amazing. Why would the visitor want to view a layout that was just thrown together in the space of 5 minutes on some crumby web builder? Admittedly I understand that some pages are good from web builders but I’m just giving you my advice so no hard feelings. :)

Make your own content! Don't steal ideas off other websites. It’s wrong! People put a lot of effort into their websites and it’s sad to see 10 websites all displaying the same content. This has happened to me before! So please, I’m sure you've all got ideas waiting to be unlocked.

Don't make a website with a friend probability is that you will fall out or something and then that’s it the progress on your website goes down. Just make one on your own and let your friend also make one. Hey you can link to each other! Sorted.

Learn some basic html before starting then you can at least edit you site! It’s ridiculous making a website if you haven't the slightest clue what html is or how to navigate through the internet community. Study time! ;) I recommend:Lissa explains it all for basic html help.

Make your text easy to read! This means NO chat speak. Many people find it annoying and difficult to understand. You'll drive your visitors away if reading your content is one giant headache. Also make your navigation simple with clear, working links. Broken links frustrate people.

Check your website is suitable for your target audience. Hey just a thought. If adult content is going to be on your site, please state so before people enter your site.

Don't over crowd your site with millions of adverts. Some adverts are good but over cramming is too extreme and closing popups can get on your visitors nerves.

Offer something to your visitors like a free graphic or something it will make them want to come back because they feel like they're getting something in return. Link backs are quite good.

Don't advertise voting links everywhere it just makes you look desperate. Just advertise them in a clear place and leave the rest to the visitors.

If you’re going to have music on your site make sure there’s a stop button, not everyone may have the same taste in music as you.

Start off with a free host because then your not wasting any money. There are plenty of good websites that are hosted simply with freewebs or something. So don't think that having a ".com" will get you lots visitors.

Thank you for reading I know it was a lot. Hopefully you've picked up some advice! X
