Making a website

A basic guide to getting started

This is Kihugs basic guide to setting up a website. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. I regret that sometimes it takes me a while to answer all emails.

Html? what?

You must learn or already know basic html. Html is the basis of all sites, without it there is no site! Here is a site that teaches really basic html: click. Once you start to work your way through a few tutorials that will build your confidence. Don’t get upset when comparing your site to advanced sites. These people have had their sites longer than you, so they’re bound to be better!

Free Hosts

Sign up your website with a free host. Here are a few suggestions: Freewebs, Angelfire, GeoCities. They will host your site for free, no charges! Of course you won’t have your own domain, but it’s a start. You can pick a really cool name from there that you would want to represent your site. Remember to make your name unique but easy to read!

Basic Must haves

Every website basic needs is to have a tagboard so viewers can leave you messages; a contact page to report errors or suggestions; a credits page so you can credit every resource you have used, some visitor content as this is the reason they came to your site in the first place. All resources and links are stated below this tutorial.

Graphics

You must know how to make graphics. You can use any graphics programme you want. At the bottom of this I have listed some programmes.

It's all about content

What content should I include so people will like my site? Below are the basics, be creative and add your own style.

Free Graphics
Fun Games
Contests
Blinkies
Avatars
Icons
Layouts
Reads
Any other content you think would be interesting!

In the owner section you could include:

Information about you
Terms and conditions
Your awards or gifts
And any other things you would like to share

In the Links section you could include:

Sister Sites
Button Wall
Tagboard
Contact Page
Link me Page
Vote for Me Page
Page of Credits/Thanks

(Make link back banners so people who use your stuff can credit by linking you)

Topsites

After you have completed your website and you are ready to show it to the world, don't forget to join a topsite List. A topsite List is a huge directory of websites that thousands of people go to look for specific websites. So put your website in cute topsite lists, get your visitors to vote for you and you will be able to get lots of visitors to your website in no time!
