Am I being too modest?

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

I love trying out the image effects on this blogging software, just been amusing myself with it for the past half hour. Hence the picture on the left. It has a “Polaroid effect” on it.

Today in English Language we were analysing children’s books and how they are written. For example, looking at the sentence structure, layout on the page and semantic fields.

It brought back memories of my dad reading to me when I was younger. He used to read me a story every night until I could read better than him!

I’m really proud that I got interested in reading from a young age, I think it helped fuel my passion for writing.

Yesterday I was asked to read one of my pieces of writing out to the class. I was super nervous and I insisted that my piece was lame and not worth reading out. I was graded an A+ on that piece. It was a review of a made-up novel entitled ‘Jack and Jill’ (like the nursery rhyme).

I have no idea why I put myself down like that, I think its just because of the pressure of reading it out made me feel nervous and embarrassed. My hands were shaking and my voice was wobbling.

Part of my review contained an ‘extract’ from the made-up book which was sort of a mushy scene detailing how Jill first fell in love with Jack. In all honesty I was just describing me and my boyfriend Chris. I wrote about how Jill loved Jack’s cheeky smile (which is what I love about Chris!). Maybe because I was thinking about Chris that is what made me blush.

It’s strange how I managed to relate something back to my boyfriend in that piece even though I wasn’t particularly thinking about him at the time.

When I get my work back I will put the review on here so you can see it for yourselves. :)

My question for  today is:

Have you ever been in a similar situation where you have felt embarrassed or nervous and how did you deal with it?

Firstly, your work was amazing Ris. Seriously. You are WAAAAAYYYYYYYYY to modest, you got the top mark in the class, and you thought it was rubbish. that makes everyone elses seems worthless. :P
You was way cute though blushing. *feels like Sakura & Tomoyo.*
But yeah, get yourself to the supermarket and buy a can of self-confidence and self-belief.

1. Have you ever been in a similar situation where you have felt embarrassed or nervous and how did you deal with it?
Nope neverr..... well yeah actually. in year six when I had a friggin' stutter. It made me more determained to p[roove to people I weren't a bubbling idiot though. Shola. xx

OMG polaroid effects! AWESOMEEEEE. ^_^

I want to see that piece! It must have been pretty awesome if you got A+! And I tend to write a lot of things that relate to James and I.. but I'd be totally embarrassed if I had to read out something like that. I hate speeches and presenting things :P

Well.. there was this time my teacher in year six, read everyone's story out loud. I was embarrassed by mine because it was 'based on a true story' on some stupid happenings between my friends and I.. and I had a huge crush on my friend. I hated my teacher reading it out!!!!

Wow, congrats on your A+! That's awesome. Lol, it does sound like you're a little too modest, but hey, at least you're not an arrogant egomaniac. ;) Modesty's a good thing anyway, as long as it's at a healthy level and you're not constantly beating up on yourself. :) That's cute though that you were thinking of your relationship with your boyfriend when you were writing about Jill falling in love with Jack. I'm sure that would have contributed to how nervous you felt reading it out to the class!

Anyway, on to your question...
Have you ever been in a similar situation where you have felt embarrassed or nervous and how did you deal with it?
- Today, yesterday or my whole life in general? Lol. I get nervous and embarrassed very easily (tends to be the case when you have an anxiety disorder!), but most of the time I manage to deal with it through relaxation techniques like deep breathing, visualization and this thing called mindfulness. I find easing the physical anxiety makes it much easier to work on easing the mental anxiety. :)

Anyway, great site you have here! That little character in your header graphic is too cute. :) Take care!

Woop! Like the picture, very cute :P I can never make pictures like that since my picture software is crap :[

Awww, that is seriously cute! You're boyfriend is very lucky he has such a caring and nice girlfriend :]
Last year i did a review for a childrens book, i think it was the woman and the spider or the turnip and the cat?! I can't remember :D

Answer: Oooh, every time i have to read out something in English class i get really nervous. And then when i speak, i speak to quicky and i get bubbles of saliva in my mouth which makes me choke. Not good!

Yeah.. stupid converter! I am too lazy, man. I cannot be stuffffffffed to try and convert; perhaps I'll record it again, and make it a lot shorter. It was 6 minutes after all!

Last names are okay I think - as long as you're aware! I mean, giving out phone numbers and such is obviously quite sensitive!

I like the polaroid effect, really cute. :)

There are countless situations which I feel nervous especially when doing a public presentation. I just imagine and "transform" all those huge eyes staring at me into teddy bears. ;) I'll be just practising my speech with some toys so I perform better. Try that? :D

YES I absolutely despise creepy crawlies!! They're so disgusting. I freaked out big time. In fact, I think I had a freaky dream about them :(

Anyway.. I get to see James today, which is totally awesome :D I'm worried about the group project.. I hope my group gets back to me soon. That's why I hate group projects. XD

Haha yeah, my feet are still a bit sore, but I'm wearing the new boots I bought yesterday. They're less high and they're actually quite comfortable. XD

I'm soooo happy with the box set *bounces*

Yes, I definitely get nervous when I have to read or talk in front of a bunch of people. I try to think of it as no big deal, or try not to think about it at all. Still, I even get nervous if someone is just reading something I've written to themselves... it's silly though. There's nothing to be nervous about! :)

Anyway, I thought I would drop by and say hello. I'm back from hiatus, finally! lol

Hehe, your comment confused me because it wasn't on my most recent blog. Haha, anyway. (I have a fuack entry which I posted earlier.. perhaps you didn't see it haha. Thought you might want to catch up on Bearman since I haven't written about him for a while!)

Best of luck in the exams! I hope you can find a job - the recession is being a piece of crap :(

Definitely! If you're arrogant you simply think you know everything, despite what everyone else thinks. There is a big difference. Which I am sure Bearman has no idea about!

Haha there are pages that need cleaning though. Oh well. I just don't want things to get bloated before I get a chance to clean xD

Yeah, I could actually save some for renewal. I had better stop.. *sweats*. But I must register another! I need one to put stuff about James and I! LOL

Take care! xo

I know how it feels writing about something even though you're not entirely thinking about it. Just like you I have this tendency of relating things that are connected with the relationship I have with my boyfriend. Haha it's pretty crazy, I know.. but I guess that's what love does? :P

Congrats on getting an A+!

Hey,

I am exactly like you! I can't stand reading my work in front of the class. Also, I'm dyslexic so reading is difficult enough for me. I always have the odd idiot laughing because I take so long to read things. It sucks!

Have you ever been in a similar situation where you have felt embarrassed or nervous and how did you deal with it?
Yes, for my English GCSE I had to do a talk in front of the class. It was horrible. I just got on with it I guess - it felt good when I'd finished and I got a B+ so I was happy.

Thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad you like my site - a lot of people think its too simple.
